Abstract

The status of women in Indian society has continuously evolved under the influence of social, cultural, economic, and political changes. In ancient times, women enjoyed respect and dignity, reflected in religious and philosophical traditions. However, with the passage of time, patriarchal structures led to the marginalization of women and the emergence of social evils such as dowry, domestic violence, and gender discrimination. The pre- and post-independence periods witnessed significant reform efforts, including the promotion of women’s education and constitutional guarantees of equality and freedom. Modernization, industrialization, and globalization have further transformed women’s roles, enabling greater participation in education, employment, and public life. Despite these advancements, women continue to face challenges related to social mindset, family expectations, and unequal power relations. This article analyzes the role of women in Indian society, identifies major problems affecting their lives, and discusses possible solutions. It emphasizes that genuine empowerment requires not only legal protection and economic independence but also a fundamental change in social attitudes and cultural values.

Abstract in Hindi Language:  भारतीय समाज में महिलाओं की स्थिति सामाजिक, सांस्कृतिक, आर्थिक और राजनीतिक परिवर्तनों के प्रभाव में निरंतर विकसित होती रही है। प्राचीन काल में महिलाओं को सम्मान और गरिमा प्राप्त थी, जो धार्मिक एवं दार्शनिक परंपराओं में परिलक्षित होती है। किंतु समय के साथ पितृसत्तात्मक संरचनाओं के प्रभाव से महिलाओं का हाशियाकरण हुआ और दहेज, घरेलू हिंसा तथा लैंगिक भेदभाव जैसी सामाजिक कुरीतियाँ उभरकर सामने आईं। स्वतंत्रता-पूर्व और स्वतंत्रता-पश्चात काल में महिलाओं की स्थिति में सुधार हेतु अनेक महत्वपूर्ण सुधार प्रयास किए गए, जिनमें स्त्री-शिक्षा का प्रसार तथा समानता और स्वतंत्रता की संवैधानिक गारंटी प्रमुख हैं। आधुनिकीकरण, औद्योगीकरण और वैश्वीकरण ने महिलाओं की भूमिकाओं में और अधिक परिवर्तन किया है, जिससे शिक्षा, रोजगार और सार्वजनिक जीवन में उनकी भागीदारी बढ़ी है। इन प्रगतियों के बावजूद सामाजिक मानसिकता, पारिवारिक अपेक्षाओं और असमान शक्ति-संबंधों के कारण महिलाओं को आज भी अनेक चुनौतियों का सामना करना पड़ रहा है। यह लेख भारतीय समाज में नारी की भूमिका का विश्लेषण करता है, उनकी प्रमुख समस्याओं की पहचान करता है तथा संभावित समाधानों पर चर्चा करता है। लेख इस तथ्य पर बल देता है कि वास्तविक सशक्तिकरण के लिए केवल कानूनी संरक्षण और आर्थिक स्वतंत्रता ही नहीं, बल्कि सामाजिक दृष्टिकोण और सांस्कृतिक मूल्यों में मूलभूत परिवर्तन भी आवश्यक है।
