Abstract

Limbu tribe, one of the major indigenous group mainly residing in Sikkim, Nepal, Darjeeling and Assam, has a rich repository of traditional and cultural heritage. Peoples of Limbu community are nature worshippers while do not follow the idol system. They maintain a rich cultural legacy grounded in natural values, spirituality, and collective values. Limbu community celebrates variety of traditional festivals such as Chasok Tongnam, Kokphekwa tongnam, Sisekpa tongnam etc.  All the festivals are deeply intertwined to the social and cultural identity of the Limbu community. These festivals are considered as the crucial platforms for social cohesion, cultural preservation and continuity as well as community bonding among the Limbu community and individual family. Limbu traditional festivals are very crucial to the community, since it helps to sustain their cultural identity, bring togetherness for communities, families, generations and enhance strong social connections in community. The festivals are highly concerned with nature and spirituality, is apparent in their profound connections to agriculture, biodiversity, and ancestral worship. These festivals transmit indigenous knowledge and oral traditions to younger generations through variety of songs, dances, and celebrations. This paper addresses the social and cultural impacts of traditional festivals; particularly focusing on the role in reinforcing the unique identity, fostering social and cultural cohesion, transforming distinctive cultural values and beliefs from one generation to the next along with trend of challenges exists within the Limbu community.
