Abstract

This study examines the widespread impact of drug abuse on Indian society, highlighting its social, economic, psychological, and moral consequences. Traditionally, narcotic substances were used for medicinal purposes, but in the contemporary context, their misuse—especially among youth—has become a serious concern. Influenced by western culture and media, young individuals increasingly engage in substance abuse, leading to social alienation, crime, and declining productivity. The paper discusses the role of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, in regulating and controlling drug-related activities in India. It also explores government policies, institutional mechanisms, and strategies such as awareness, rehabilitation, and demand reduction to combat drug abuse. The study emphasizes the need for coordinated efforts involving government agencies, healthcare institutions, and society to address this issue effectively. It concludes that preventing drug abuse is essential for national development, social stability, and the well-being of future generations.

Abstract in Hindi Language: यह अध्ययन भारतीय समाज पर मादक द्रव्यों के दुरुपयोग के व्यापक प्रभावों का विश्लेषण करता है, जिसमें सामाजिक, आर्थिक, मानसिक तथा नैतिक परिणामों पर विशेष ध्यान दिया गया है। परंपरागत रूप से मादक पदार्थों का उपयोग औषधीय उद्देश्यों के लिए किया जाता था, किंतु वर्तमान समय में विशेषकर युवाओं में इसका दुरुपयोग गंभीर समस्या बन गया है। पाश्चात्य संस्कृति और मीडिया के प्रभाव से युवा वर्ग नशे की ओर आकर्षित हो रहा है, जिससे सामाजिक अलगाव, अपराध और कार्यक्षमता में कमी जैसी समस्याएँ उत्पन्न हो रही हैं। अध्ययन में नारकोटिक ड्रग्स एंड साइकोट्रोपिक पदार्थ अधिनियम, 1985 की भूमिका, सरकारी नीतियों तथा नियंत्रण तंत्र का विश्लेषण किया गया है। साथ ही जागरूकता, उपचार, पुनर्वास और मांग में कमी जैसे उपायों पर भी चर्चा की गई है। निष्कर्षतः यह कहा गया है कि मादक द्रव्यों के दुरुपयोग की रोकथाम राष्ट्र के विकास और सामाजिक स्थिरता के लिए अत्यंत आवश्यक है।
