Adaptation Strategies Adopted by Farm Women for Climate Change

Climate change represents a multifaceted global challenge that affects diverse environmental components and significantly influences human lifestyles. Adaptation to climate change involves a two-step process, wherein individuals—particularly farmers—must first perceive changes in climatic conditions and subsequently respond through appropriate adaptive actions. Within this context, women play a multidimensional and vital role in the sustainable development of the economy through their contributions to both household and agricultural activities. The present study sought to examine the adaptation strategies adopted by farm women in response to climate change in the Bikaner district of Rajasthan. A sample of 280 farm women was selected for the present descriptive study. The findings revealed that the overall level of adaptation strategies employed by farm women—pertaining to agricultural crops, financial management, family management, soil and water conservation, and livestock management—fell within the medium category. Furthermore, a positive and significant relationship was observed between adaptation strategies and several independent variables, including age, education, family occupation, farm size, livestock (number, type, and experience), annual family income, farming experience, mass media utilization, contact with extension personnel, and social participation at the 0.05 level of significance. In contrast, caste, family size, and family type were found to have no significant relationship with adaptation strategies.
