Introduction to Classical Metres: An Overview of Classical Poetry and the Essence of Prosody

Abstract

This paper examines the conceptual and historical nature of Chandas Shastra within the Vedic and classical traditions. It discusses the importance of prosody as a Vedanga, its etymology, the views of scholars such as Yaska, Pingala, and Durga Acharya, and the usage of the term chandas in Vedic texts. The tradition of Pingala’s Chandas Sutra, classifications of metres, the division into vritta and jati, the characteristics of samavritta, ardhasamavritta, and vishamavritta, considerations of yati and laghu–guru, the structure of ganas, special features of matrik metres, and detailed explanations of major metres such as Indravajra, Upendravajra, Vamshastha, Rathoddhata, Shardulavikridita, Shikharini, and Drutavilambita are presented with textual references. Through this, both the theoretical and practical significance of Chandas Shastra is highlighted.

Abstract in Sanskrit Language: अयं लेखः छन्दःशास्त्रस्य वैदिक–लौकिकपरम्परायां स्थितं तात्त्विकं, ऐतिहासिकं च स्वरूपं विवृणोति। वेदाङ्गत्वेन छन्दसः महत्त्वं, तस्य व्युत्पत्तिः, यास्क–पिङ्गल–दुर्गाचार्यादीनां मतानि, तथा वैदिकग्रन्थेषु छन्दःशब्दस्य प्रयोगः अत्र विवेचितः। पिङ्गलाचार्यकृतछन्दःसूत्रस्य परम्परा, छन्दोभेदाः, वृत्त–जात्यादिविभागः, समवृत्त–अर्धसमवृत्त–विषमवृत्तानां लक्षणानि, यतिलघुगुरुविचारः, गणस्वरूपं, मात्रिकच्छन्दसां विशेषाः, तथा प्रमुखवृत्तानां यथा इन्द्रवज्रा, उपेन्द्रवज्रा, वंशस्थ, रथोद्धता, शार्दूलविक्रीडित, शिखरिणी, द्रुतविलम्बित इत्यादीनां सप्रमाणं निरूपणं कृतम्। अनेन छन्दःशास्त्रस्य सैद्धान्तिकं तथा प्रयोगात्मकं महत्वं प्रकाश्यते।
