The Discourse on Transgender Identity in Neerja Madhav’s Novel Yamdeep

नीरजा माधव के उपन्यास ‘यमदीप’ में ‘किन्नर-विमर्श’

Abstract

In her novel Yamdeep, writer Neerja Madhav articulates the pain and suffering of the transgender community, which is often regarded as highly marginalized in society. The novel depicts how this community is subjected to neglect and oppression by both family and society, and how its members are deprived of their basic rights. The author points out that although the government has introduced certain provisions for this third-gender community, no significant change is visible in their social condition. The primary reason for this is the lack of acceptance by families and society. At times, their very birth is questioned, while at other times they are treated with neglect, ridicule, and social disdain. Through this novel, the author presents a deeply moving narrative of the transgender community and places strong emphasis on the need for their social reform and inclusion.

Abstract in Hindi Language:  लेखिका नीरजा माधव ने अपने उपन्यास ’यमदीप’ के माध्यम से समाज में अत्यधिक हीन समझे जाने वाले किन्नर समुदाय की पीड़ा को अभिव्यक्त किया है। यह समुदाय विशेष किस प्रकार परिवार तथा समाज से पीड़ित रहता है, किस प्रकार उन्हें पीड़ित किया जाता है, किस प्रकार उन्हें उनके अधिकारों से भी वंचित रखा जाता है उसका वर्णन इस उपन्यास में किया गया है। लेखिका ने बतलाया है कि सरकार ने भले ही इस तृतीय लिंगी समुदाय के लिए कुछ प्रावधान किए है परन्तु फिर भी कुछ विशेष परिवर्तन इस समुदाय विशेष में दिखलाई नहीं दे रहे। इसका सबसे बड़ा कारण परिवार तथा समाज द्वारा उन्हें न अपनाना है। समाज द्वारा कभी तो इन पर जन्म का प्रश्न चिह्न लगाया जाता है तो कभी इन्हें उपेक्षा तथा उपहास का पात्र माना जाता है। लेखिका ने अपने इस उपन्यास में इस समुदाय विशेष की मार्मिक गाथा को अभिव्यक्त करते हुए इनके सुधार पर विशेष बल दिया है।
