Harmonizing Tradition and Science: An Evidence-Based Educational Approach to Yoga and Ayurveda

Yoga and Ayurveda are ancient Indian knowledge systems with deep cultural roots and demonstrable benefits for health and wellbeing. However, variability in teaching methods, assessment, and linkage to contemporary learning science limits their integration into mainstream education and healthcare. This paper proposes a practical, evidence-based pedagogy (EBP) framework for Yoga and Ayurveda education that preserves traditional integrity while aligning with contemporary instructional design, learning assessment, and research practices. We presented (1) a rationale and review of pedagogical challenges; (2) a modular, competency-based curriculum model that embeds evidence generation and formative assessment; (3) teacher training, quality assurance, and accreditation pathways; and (4) an evaluation strategy employing mixed-methods research to measure learning outcomes, safety, fidelity, and health impact. Implementation of the proposed EBP framework revealed statistically significant improvements (p < 0.05) across key learning domains—including conceptual understanding, practical skills, pedagogical competence, and research literacy—while maintaining stable long-term retention. Qualitative insights highlighted strong acceptance of EBP as a complementary extension of traditional pedagogy, with learners valuing structured reflection and feedback, and teachers observing improved engagement, clarity, and integration of scientific perspectives with traditional wisdom. The proposed approach thus enhances transparency, effectiveness, and credibility in Yoga and Ayurveda education, making it more adaptable, reproducible, and scalable across formal and non-formal educational contexts.
