Literary Representation of Environmental Discourse: In the Context of Contemporary Hindi Novels

Abstract

Literature is a living mirror of the cultural, social, and intellectual journey of human civilization. It is not merely a medium of entertainment but also a historical record of human experiences, emotions, and ideas. Literary works bear witness to the evolution of humanity, its struggles, and its achievements. Hindi literature continues this tradition, and among its many forms, narrative literature has been especially popular. Within narrative literature, the novel has, over time, evolved in form, language, and plot, increasingly engaging with contemporary issues, global challenges, and the crises of human existence. Among these contemporary concerns, the environmental crisis has emerged as a significant theme. In contemporary Hindi novels, environmental discourse not only points to problems but also re-examines the interrelationship between humans and nature. Here, nature is presented as a living character, deeply connected with human joys and sorrows, struggles, and moral values. These novels sensitively depict the social, economic, and cultural impacts of the environmental crisis.

Abstract in Hindi Language: साहित्य मानव सभ्यता की सांस्कृतिक, सामाजिक और वैचारिक यात्रा का जीवंत दर्पण है, जो केवल मनोरंजन का साधन नहीं, बल्कि मानवीय अनुभवों, भावनाओं और विचारों का ऐतिहासिक दस्तावेज भी है। इसकी रचनाएँ मानवता की विकास यात्रा, संघर्ष गाथाओं और उपलब्धियों का प्रमाण प्रस्तुत करती हैं। हिन्दी साहित्य इस परंपरा का संवाहक है, और इसकी अनेक विधाओं में कथा साहित्य विशेष रूप से लोकप्रिय रहा है। कथा साहित्य की महत्वपूर्ण विधा उपन्यास समय के साथ शिल्प, भाषा और कथानक में परिवर्तन करते हुए समकालीन प्रश्नों, वैश्विक चुनौतियों और मानवीय अस्तित्व के संकटों को अपने कथ्य में समेटने लगी है। इन्हीं समकालीन प्रश्नों में पर्यावरणीय संकट एक महत्त्वपूर्ण विषय के रूप में उभरा है।  समकालीन हिन्दी उपन्यासों में पर्यावरण विमर्श केवल समस्याओं की ओर संकेत नहीं करता, बल्कि मनुष्य और प्रकृति के अंतर्संबंध की पुनर्समीक्षा करता है। यहाँ प्रकृति को एक सजीव पात्र के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया जाता है, जो मानव जीवन के सुख-दुख, संघर्ष और नैतिकता से गहराई से जुड़ी होती है। इन उपन्यासों में पर्यावरणीय संकट के सामाजिक, आर्थिक और सांस्कृतिक प्रभावों का संवेदनशील चित्रण किया गया है।
