Hero of Auspicious Music: 'Ustad Bismillah Khan'

Abstract

Ustad Bismillah Khan was born on March 21, 1916, in the Bandhan Patwa locality of Dumraon (Buxar), Bihar. His father, Bachai Mian Paigambar Khan, was a renowned shehnai player of his time. Under the guidance of his maternal uncle and guru, Ali Bakhsh, Bismillah Khan received formal training in shehnai in Varanasi. Apart from incorporating the features of the Kirana Gharana, he also infused the elements of Agra and Banaras Gharanas into his playing style. Alongside shehnai, Bismillah Khan also received formal training in khayal, thumri, dhamar, and dhrupad from the famous Ustad Muhammad Hussain Khan of Lucknow. He earned immense recognition for the Indian instrument shehnai both in India and abroad. On August 15, 1947, during India’s first Independence Day celebration at the Red Fort, Khan Sahib played the shehnai. He also composed music for films such as Goonj Uthi Shehnai and Sanadhi Appanna. He was honored with prestigious awards including the Bharat Ratna, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Tansen Award, Nepal Academy Award, Soviet Nehru Award, and the Kala Saraswati Award. He passed away on August 21, 2006, in Varanasi.

Abstract in Hindi Language: उस्ताद बिस्मिल्ला खां का जन्म 21 मार्च, 1916 ई. को बिहार के डूमरांव (बक्सर) के बंधन पटवा मुहल्ले में हुआ था। इनके पिता बचई मियां पैगम्बर खां अपने समय के अच्छे शहनाई वादक थे।अपने मामा एवं गुरु अली बख्श के संरक्षण में वाराणसी में बिस्मिल्ला साहब ने शहनाई की शिक्षा ली। उन्होंने किराना घराने के अलावा आगरा और बनारस घराने की विशेषताओं का भी अपने वादन में समावेश किया । शहनाई वादन के साथ-साथ बिस्मिल्ला साहब ने लखनऊ के प्रसिद्ध उस्ताद मुहम्मद हुसैन खां से ख्याल, ठुमरी, धमार एवं ध्रुपद की विधिवत् शिक्षा ली। आपने देश-विदेश में भारतीय वाद्य शहनाई को प्रतिष्ठित किया ।15 अगस्त, सन् 1947 ई. को लाल किले में प्रथम स्वाधीनता समारोह में खां साहब ने शहनाई बजाई थी। बिस्मिल्ला साहब ने गूंज उठी शहनाई, 'सानाधी  अपन्ना' फिल्मों में संगीत निर्देशन किया। उन्हें 'भारतरत्न' पद्मश्री, पद्मभूषण और पद्मविभूषण तानसेन पुरस्कार, नेपाल अकादमी पुरस्कार, सोवियत नेहरू पुरस्कार तथा कला सरस्वती पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।21 अगस्त, 2006 को वाराणसी में उनका निधन हो गया।
