Abstract

The strength and integrity of any society are fundamentally rooted in its commitment to equality and fraternity among its members, regardless of gender. The family, as the basic unit of society, plays a crucial role in maintaining social balance. Traditionally structured with defined roles for men and women, the family system in India has shifted from joint to nuclear forms. However, this structure often becomes a breeding ground for domestic violence, primarily due to entrenched patriarchal norms and the misuse of male dominance. Women frequently endure various forms of abuse—physical, emotional, financial, and sexual—leading to serious implications for societal health. Despite being a longstanding issue globally, domestic violence remains prevalent in India, prompting government intervention through legislation and awareness programs. According to the Annual Report of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (2020–21), women’s empowerment is pivotal to sustainable development, focusing on education, health, economic independence, and poverty eradication.
