The paper attempts to study the nature of the idea of the state as propounded by Plato in his various texts, The Republic, The Politicus or The Statesman and The Laws. Each of these texts was written at different periods in Plato’s life and each underlines a different understanding of the idea of the state. The relevance of some of those ideas might be the subject of debate but their contribution to political philosophy remains unparalleled in the sense that these dialogues have deeply enriched the body of political philosophy.
