A Brief Introduction to the Life, Time, and Works of Charitravardhan

Abstract

This article presents a brief introduction to the life, time, and works of Charitravardhan. The article discusses the limited information available about Charitravardhan's life, including some observations made by Dr. V. K. Gode regarding his father's name and the connection to his Guru Kalyanraj's tradition. Charitravardhan's knowledge was extensive in fields like grammar, logic, Vedanta, Upanishads, and literature, which earned him titles such as ‘Narveshasaraswati’ and ‘Narveshvani.’ The article also provides evidence suggesting that Charitravardhan's period can be placed in the mid-15th and 16th centuries. Based on such evidence, a review and research of some of his works, such as Meghaduta, Kumarasambhava, Raghuvamsa, and Naishadhacharita, have been conducted. However, some of his works remain unpublished. Nonetheless, Charitravardhan's scholarly contributions and his literary work are of great importance to ancient Indian texts.

 Abstract in Gujarati Language: આ લેખ ચારિત્રવર્ધનની જીંદગી, સમય અને કૃતિઓનો સંક્ષિપ્ત પરિચય પ્રસ્તુત કરે છે. આ લેખમાં ચારિત્રવર્ધનના જીવન વિશે મળતી ઓછી માહિતી વિશે ચર્ચા કરવામાં આવી છે, જેમાં ડો. વી. કે. ગોડે તેના પિતાનું નામ અને તેના કલ્યાણરાજ ગુરુ પરંપરાના સંદર્ભમાં કેટલાક મંતવ્યો આપ્યા છે. ચારિત્રવર્ધનનું જ્ઞાન વ્યાકરણ, ન્યાય, વેદાંત, ઉપનિષદ અને સાહિત્યના વિવિધ ક્ષેત્રોમાં શ્રેષ્ઠ હતું, જે તેને ‘નરવેષસરસ્વતી’ અને ‘નરવેષવાણી’ જેવા ઉપાધિઓથી ઓળખાવતું હતું. લેખમાં ચારિત્રવર્ધનના સમયને 15મી અને 16મી સદીના મધ્યમાં મૂકી શકાય તે અંગે પુરાવા આપેલા છે. તેવા પુરાવાઓમાંથી કેટલીક કૃતિઓનું ટીકાવલોકન અને સંશોધન પણ કરવામાં આવ્યું છે, જેમ કે મેઘદૂત, કુમારસંભવ, રઘુવંશ, નૈષધચરિત વગેરે. છતાં, તેની કેટલીક કૃતિઓ અપ્રકાશિત રહી છે, પરંતુ ચારિત્રવર્ધનનું વિદ્વાનપણ અને તેની સાહિત્યિક યોગદાન ભારતના પ્રાચીન ગ્રંથો માટે ખૂબ મહત્વપૂર્ણ છે.
